Introduction

A Visual Narrative on Solitude and Womanhood

When I received the commission from Amor al Teatro and the Teatro Español de Madrid to design the dossier for Luisa Carnés' Cumpleaños, the first thing I did was read the script. Twice.

Challenges

Solitude, Womanhood, and Theater

The play centers on a woman who, on her very birthday, is confronted by a deep sense of loneliness. She speaks with her family, yet feels no closeness. My goal with this editorial piece was to capture the ephemeral nature of life—the solitude and the beauty that withers over time. Because sometimes, being surrounded by people does not mean you are truly accompanied.

Solutions

Preserved Flowers: A Visual Metaphor

After reading the script and reviewing the production photos, I noticed two elements shining in opposition on stage: two facing bouquets—one fresh, the other dry. I decided to anchor the art direction in this narrative line wisely established by the scenography team.

In the dossier, the text merges with dried flowers, reminiscent of those pressed inside a book to be preserved, yet ultimately dead. I wanted to draw a parallel. Using collage techniques, I created compositions around actress Mamen Camacho to translate that stage contrast into the editorial piece, ensuring the entire project felt like a single, unified experience.
